Almost immediately, the war went badly wrong for the British… Zulu forces in Zululand circa 1879 Realising they had been spotted, the Zulus rose as one and began their attack, using their traditional tactic of encirclement known as the izimpondo zankomo ('horns of the buffalo')… British forces in Afghanistan, 1878-1880 Mindful of the disaster that befell the expedition during the First Afghan War, the Indian government prepared for this campaign in a much more diligent manner. The plan was to have three columns move simultaneously into the three main avenues of approach into Afghanistan. The largest was the Peshawar Field Force that was led by Lt-Gen. Samuel Browne the most Northernly of the three forces.. Native forces in Afghanistan, 1878-1880 The defeats at Ali Masjid and Peiwar Kotal had fatally shattered Sher Ali's grip on power in Afghanistan. It was clear that the various tribes were already splitting into various factions, for or against Sher Ali, the British or for a new Amir altogether.
